Frugal Happenings

Here's a random assortment from the last week or so:

* My aunt gave me some delicious produce from her garden.

* I batched my errands.  Nearly all of the driving on this list was done when I was already in the area for another task.

* Went to the farm supply store to get super cheap cat litter.  This is the first time I've had to buy any since the first of June (I buy 80 lbs at a time) AND it was on sale again.  Win win.

* I watched my friend's baby for a couple of hours so my friend could visit the dentist.  She took me out for lunch afterward (free food + friend time!!).

* Received a small bonus from work.  Woo hoo!

* Received a small check from my side gig.

* Sold a coat on Tradesy for ~$30.

* Went to CVS to get hair dye as the kind I like (currently Revlon Luxurious Colorsilk Buttercream) was on sale.  Sale price was $4.50 each and you would get $3 ECB if you bought two.  I also printed two $1 coupons off the Revlon website.  Total cost after coupon: $3.50 each PLUS I got the $3 ECB for my next trip.  Also bought a .99 lipstick (I told you I have a problem) but I had a 30% off coupon loaded to my card so it was .69 for the lipstick.

* Poked around on the internet to come up with inexpensive gift ideas and homemade Christmas gift ideas.  Got all excited with my glue gun (purchased for $1 at an estate sale a couple of years ago new in package) and tried to burn myself.  Found out that my back up glue sticks were not the right size, prompting a trip the next day to...

* Went to Hobby Lobby for inexpensive craft supplies to try to make some gifts.  Used a 40% off coupon on the glue sticks for my glue gun and saved $2.  I have a rather large craft supply at home (mostly thrifted) but needed some small canvases and acrylic paint and such.  Almost bought a small $42 white pre-lit Christmas tree that looked vintage-y but talked myself out of it.  For now.

* Dillon's has digital coupons for a free product nearly every Friday.  You have to download the coupons on Fridays but they're actually good for a couple of weeks.  I used two of these when I got groceries to get free nut mix and free lunch meat.  I also used a $2 coupon for cat food.  While I was at the store, I also got two packages of organic spinach and one package of organic romaine hearts on manager's markdown- love cheap produce!

* While I was at Dillon's, I noticed that I needed to get gas in the car.  Used my fuel points to get .10 off per gallon for a total savings of .95.  I paid $3.01 per gallon.

* Went to Aldi to get the rest of my groceries.  I am always amazed at their low prices.  They rearranged my store but I was still in and out in under 15 minutes.

* Talked to another psychologist about using a free mentorship program that will help with a psychology certification that I am pursuing.  This is a complicated and expensive process so any free help is welcomed!!!

* Enrolled in two more free Coursera courses.  I enrolled in a class on Alzheimer's and other neurocognitive disorders and in a class on Diabetes treatment.  My practice of psychology is specialized to healthcare settings so these will be really helpful.  I am always trying to find new ways to learn and become a better clinician and the internet provides a ton of great resources.

* Used my credit card on all but the Aldi purchase to earn points.  I recently switched to a Upromise credit card because of their fantastic cash back, but I use the points earned as an extra payment on student loans.  More info to come in a future post.

* Received a couple of books from Paperback Swap (link in sidebar) and posted a few books to swap.

I can't believe the price you pay for petrol (gas). Today $1 = 62 pence. So you paid $4.96 for 1 gallon without the discount. That would be the equivalent of about 75-80p per litre here in England and we pay almost £1.50 per litre. So we pay just about double.

You got some other good bargains too : )
Jo- as much as we whine and complain about gas prices here in the U.S., it is certainly dirt cheap compared to the rest of the world!! :) Thanks for commenting!

Hi Frugal Shrink!
I am curious what certification you are pursuing. I am in the same field and always like to know what's new, what is worth pursuing, etc.
MBH- I'm pursuing board cert. Feel free to email me (in sidebar) a bit more about your work and I can make recommendations on what's worth it and what's not! :)
