Dialing Down: Allergy Medication

In June, I gave you the breathtaking story of how I dialed down my cat litter expenses.  Here is the latest installment...saving money on generic Zyrtec!!!

I'm a firm believer in small holes sinking big ships, so I periodically go through my expenses to see what small costs need to be adjusted.  Sadly, this is QUITE enjoyable to me and I am full of glee as I go through my credit card statements with a highlighter.  Seriously.  I recently came up with a list of expenses that I wanted to see if I could reduce.  Allergy medicine was on the top of my list.


A few years ago, I developed seasonal allergies.  I lived in denial about this for some time (I am quite handy with denial) but eventually gave in to the fact that I need to take allergy medicine or else spend my days sneezing and blowing my nose.  I had a prescription that was too expensive so I tried generic over the counter Zyrtec.  It fit the bill, and I didn't think anything of it until the price kept increasing.  And increasing.  Until I was paying $9 for a 30 day supply of generic Zyrtec at Dollar General.  I spent some time with my good friend Google and found that Amazon carries Kirkland (a Costco brand) generic Zyrtec which is $18.89 as of this writing for a ONE YEAR SUPPLY.  You read that right.  It's 365 tabs for less than $20.  Here is the link if you're interested (not an affiliate link). 

Let's do the math:
13 bottles from Dollar General @ 9.00 = $117.00
1 bottle from Amazon @ 18.89=                $18.89
Total Savings per year:                               $98.11

I'll take it.
